Dance Ball dels Capgrossos de Girona

In 2002 Grandfather Tata and Girl were added to the set of bigheads. They were a donation from the Mutual Benefit Society of the city. In honor ot its 100th anniversary, the organization commissioned forty pairs of bigheads, all the same, and gave them to all the capitals of Catalonia’s counties.

They are fiberglass bigheads, extremely lightweight, that were made by the sculptor Ramon Aumedes of the “Sardanaca” workshop in Granollers. They represent the founder of the Mutual Benefit Soceity, Joseph Nausa i Fernando, and his granddaughter, symbolizing the past and the future. Originally, they were named Grandfather Joseph and Anna, the names of the people that were the models for the figures. In Girona, however, they have always received the names Grandfather Tata and Girl.

He is a bighead of an old man, a bit bald and laughing heartily. He wears a thick white moustache. Actually, thanks to the mischief of his animator, Joseph Solergastó, he has become one of the most popular bigheads. He always carries a broom and, because of that, he is also known among chlldren as the bighead of the broom.
